On February 14, ISSAI Data Scientist Madina Abdrakhmanova and PR Coordinator Aliya Mukhidinova joined the roundtable discussion, dedicated to “AI in scientific research: opportunities and risks”, organized by the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan (KazISS).
This event started with KazISS Director Yerkin Tukumov’s open speech. He highlighted AI’s rapid growth in each field of Kazakhstan’s economy and social life. Mr. Yerkin Tukumov mentioned that the government faces both the risks and opportunities of AI’s development.
ISSAI Data Scientist Madina Abdrakhmanova opened her speech by presenting the Institute’s research projects and achievements. She demonstrated ISSAI’s digital human prototype UMAY. Madina explained why Kazakhstan should develop its own artificial mind starting with a Kazakh large language model (LLM). The key points include protecting digital sovereignty, preserving local culture and ensuring economic resilience. Madina Abdrakhmanova pointed out the requirements of computational and financial resources to build LLMs in Kazakhstan.
The roundtable also included representatives from the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry, national universities (ENU, AITU, KAZGUU), Baitursynov “Taldau” National Education Research and Evaluation Center, and educational start-ups.
Speakers shared their experience of using ChatGPT and its effects on work and educational processes. At the end of the roundtable discussion, all invited guests expressed their interest in collaboration.
