ISSAI Founding Director Prof. Atakan Varol was a panelist at the VIII Central Asian International Forum on Quality Assurance in Education

On October 4, 2024, Founding Director of the Institute of Smart Systems and Artificial Intelligence (ISSAI), Prof. Atakan Varol, participated in the VIII Central Asian International Forum on Quality Assurance in Education, held at the Astana IT University.

The panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Olgun Cicek, Board Director of INQAAHE, CHEA US, IQA, focused on how artificial intelligence influences the development of the architecture of the education system. The discussion covered important topics such as the potential of using AI in education, AI algorithms applied in education and quality assurance, the challenges of implementing AI in the educational process, the advantages and disadvantages of AI as a tool in education, and the prospects for AI development in education.

Prof. Atakan Varol gave a presentation entitled “Generative Artificial Intelligence: Effects on Higher Education and Quality Assurance”. Dr. Varol started with the long-term effects of generative AI on job markets. He discussed the changing role of the teaching professor in the evolving universities. Moreover, he touched upon the need for changing the curriculum and learning outcomes for the future of work integrated with generative AI. Finally, Dr. Varol named generative AI literacy as the fifth literacy and emphasized the significance of teaching students the ethics, limitations, and tools of generative AI.

The panel discussion also featured insightful presentations by esteemed higher education experts featuring Dr. Saule Sagintayeva, Rector of Abylkas Saginov Karaganda Technical University, Dr. Askar Hikmetov, Rector of Astana IT University, Ms. Jolanta Silka, Head of the Latvian Agency for Higher Education, Academic Information Centre (AIC), Ms. Christina Ng, Senior Registrar, Development of HKCAAVQ, Dr. Ha Jin Hwang, Director of the School of Creative Industries, Astana IT University, and Marina Skiba, Expert of the Higher Education Development National Center, Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
