ISSAI Hosts U.S. Delegation to Discuss C5+1 Cybersecurity and AI Development Program

The Institute of Smart Systems and Artificial Intelligence at Nazarbayev University welcomed a delegation from the United States Department of State for a high-level meeting on the development of a C5+1 program focused on cybersecurity, digital development, and artificial intelligence.

The meeting took place on April 16, 2026, bringing together key representatives from ISSAI and U.S. partners to explore opportunities for regional collaboration in Central Asia.

The U.S. delegation was headed by Endrit Demi, Senior Advisor for Energy, Cyber, and Economic Growth at the Office of the Assistance Coordinator for Europe, Eurasia, and Central Asia. The delegation also included Benton Wisehart, Country Assistance Coordinator; Todd Spires, Director of Cyber and Digital Resilience Programs at CRDF Global; Saule Zupir, Project Associate at CRDF Global; Karima Akhmetova, Senior Economic Specialist at the U.S. Embassy; and Gregory Sadowski, Economic Assistant at the U.S. Embassy.

ISSAI was represented by Huseyin Atakan Varol, Founding Director; Yerbol Absalyamov, Executive Director; Alaidar Amirseiit, GR Manager; Daulet Aliyev, Legal Council and Aigerim Sarsenova, Senior External Affairs Manager.

The discussions focused on the development of a new C5+1 initiative aimed at strengthening cybersecurity capacity, supporting digital transformation, and advancing AI research across Central Asia. The program envisions the creation of a new academic and research framework, with a strong emphasis on practical impact and regional collaboration.

A key component of the initiative includes funding mechanisms for high-impact research and development projects, as well as fostering partnerships between academic institutions, government bodies, and industry stakeholders.

During the meeting, ISSAI presented its ongoing projects and capabilities in artificial intelligence, including multimodal AI systems, education initiatives, and applied research. The discussion highlighted Kazakhstan’s growing role as a regional hub for AI innovation and its potential to lead collaborative efforts in Central Asia.

The visit marks an important step toward aligning international expertise and resources to support the region’s digital and technological advancement. ISSAI expressed its readiness to contribute to the initiative by providing research expertise, educational programs, and a platform for regional cooperation.
