Empowering Kazakh Language Through AI: ISSAI at the “Zhas Galym” Scientific Forum

On April 11, representatives of the Institute of Smart Systems and Artificial Intelligence (ISSAI) — Executive Director Mr. Yerbol Absalyamov and Data Analyst Mr. Mamyrbek Parakhatuly — took part in the national student scientific conference titled “The Abai Phenomenon in the Educational and Scientific Space of the 21st Century.” The event was organized by the Department of Kazakh Language and Turkic Studies at Nazarbayev University, in celebration of the 180th anniversary of the great Kazakh thinker and poet Abai Kunanbayuly and the 15th Anniversary of Nazarbayev University.

The conference gathered distinguished guests including President of Nazarbayev University, Prof. Waqar Ahmad, Member of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Zhuldyz Suleimenova, university professors, young researchers, and students and faculty members from various universities across Kazakhstan.

The conference discussions covered a wide array of themes, such as the role of academic seminars in engaging youth in science, the role of AI and applications in language learning, the legacy of Abai and his role in shaping public service, typological studies in national literature  and the systematization of cybersecurity terminology in the Kazakh language.

During the conference, Mr. Yerbol Absalyamov delivered a presentation on ISSAI’s ongoing initiatives and research projects aimed at advancing the Kazakh language through artificial intelligence. He introduced ISSAI’s generative AI projects tailored for Kazakh language. 

Mr. Absalyamov emphasized that Soyle App is a powerful multifunctional tool for speech recognition, voice synthesis, and translation between Kazakh, Russian, English, and Turkish, which indeed has become a valuable digital platform for learning Kazakh. The speaker also presented Oylan – a state-of-the-art language-audio-vision model, that represents a new generation of intelligent assistants capable of answering users’ requests in Kazakh. He also highlighted that KazLLM, as Kazakhstan’s first large language model for the Kazakh language, marks a significant step toward multilingual AI in Central Asia. Following the presentation of Mr. Absalyamov, ISSAI’s Data Scientist Mamyrbek Parakhatuly provided a live demonstration of ISSAI’s applications, showcasing their full capabilities and practical use cases in real time.

The audience highly appreciated ISSAI’s contributions, noting the remarkable functionality of its AI applications in Kazakh. These tools were recognized for their potential to support both students and educators, making language learning and digital communication more accessible and engaging.

ISSAI continues to play a vital role in preserving and promoting the Kazakh language in the age of technological advancement. Through cutting-edge research and the development of inclusive AI solutions, ISSAI demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that the Kazakh language thrives in the digital era.
