Smart Cities – Localization Based on WiFi Signal Strength

In this work, we utilize deep learning in order to determine localization based on the strength of WiFi signals. The method is instrumental where standard GPS systems do not work due to occlusions and signal blockage in buildings. Furthermore, 5G networks can be utilized instead of WiFi access points due to the higher density of base stations in 5G networks.

Potential applications :

  • Ensuring the safety and security of workers and equipment in potentially hazardous zones (e.g. heavy industry, mines).
  • Automatic coordination of industrial vehicles for an efficient workflow.
  • Anomaly detection in controlled venues (airports, train stations, labs).
