Regional outreach: Seminar in Ulytau region

On April 29th the ISSAI team, led by deputy director for operations Yerbol Absalyamov, visited Zhezkazgan University named after Omirkhan Baikonyrov (ZhezU), main university in the newly established Ulytau region. 

During the visit, Yerbol Absalyamov held a seminar on the Institute’s computing resources, current research activities to promote AI computing among Kazakhstani universities and to build potential cooperation for joint research. He also introduced the audience to the Institute’s mission, past and ongoing research projects, explained the technical features and parameters of AI computing resources and how research is conducted using the NVIDIA DGX-1, 2. The possibility of remote access and the potential of staff exchange for joint research were also discussed. 

Philology faculty members were invited to the presentations to involve their students and researchers in ISSAI’s machine translation project Tilmash. The expected areas of joint research are object detection, natural language processing, face recognition, machine learning, and automated design. ZhezU’s Provost for science and research Dr. Alexander Sviderskiy expressed an interest in collaborative research.

ISSAI is keen to collaborate with other Kazakhstani universities to increase the country’s AI research expertise and capacity. It was the 11th region visited by ISSAI from summer 2022 and the Institute plans to visit the remaining 6 regions (Oral, Atyrau, Aktau, Semey, Kokshetau and Petropavl) by November 2024.
