Prof. Atakan Varol, the Founding Director of ISSAI, delivered a distinguished lecture during the plenary session of the AIPPA 2023 Conference held at Caspian University

Dr Varol actively participated in the Artificial Intelligence – Possibilities for Practical Applications (AIPPA 2023) Conference, an event organized by Caspian University in Almaty on 29-30th May 2023. During the plenary session, Dr Varol presented the Institute’s cutting-edge research on deep learning-based assistive technologies for individuals with cognitive and visual impairments. He commenced his presentation by introducing recent advancements in artificial intelligence, including notable developments in language models, language vision models, universal speech recognition, and holistic AI models.

Dr Varol then proceeded to showcase significant projects conducted at ISSAI. Firstly, he presented the doctoral research of Zhanat Makhataeva, which focused on the Exomem project. This groundbreaking initiative represents the first human memory augmentation system capable of constructing a holographic visuospatial memory indoors. Subsequently, Dr Varol introduced an embedded AI project conducted by ISSAI researchers Batyr Arystanbekov, Askat Kuzdeuov, and Shakhizat Nurgaliyev, titled “Image Captioning for the Visually Impaired and Blind.” This project aims to develop a solution that provides descriptive captions for images, catering specifically to individuals with visual impairments. The audience expressed widespread interest in Dr Varol’s presentation.

The AIPPA 2023 Conference spanned over two days. It encompassed diverse presentations on practical applications of artificial intelligence in various domains, including biomedicine, genetics, natural language processing, material science, computer vision, and linguistics.
